CREATE GREAT MESSAGES WITH CULTURAL NORMS
The history of cultural norms in our society is rocky. This is a long-running conversation about the role social media plays in cultural norms. Are people influenced by the norms in our society? Today, I’ll discuss a little bit of what I believe. Some people have transitioned to social media as a way to elevate their voice. However, I still see unclear messages with no intention. Some say the very act of a post could be intentional. I would agree. There is a shift from likes on social media to engagement. This shift is what I believe creates a new cultural norm every minute. Is social media a platform to explore? I believe we will truly have to tap into our words, voice, and thoughts to find out. On one side, you might hear the claim that, “there is nothing wrong with borrowing from different cultures to format a message.” It happens all the time. Our cultural norms become another language or cuisine we pick up to digest on social media. You don’t have to live in Tanzania for days to eat ugali like locals. The same applies to Instagram. You don’t have to be active daily to engage routinely and generate conversation. Imagine if our social media platforms were a reflection of social norms as conversations. It’s already happening. We could make bold and courageous statements with our images, words, or voices. This means that how we speak and write are important.
I want you to think about how you share your content online. Is it a reflection of you as a person or the norms that surround you? If we all post authentic and organic content, imagine what you would see! Together, we have the opportunity to learn, grow, and build with each other. The possibilities are endless! While we are down, we are not out! Our future is greater than our past because we can decide how to shape cultural norms. When your message is unique, it will stand out. If 1,000+ unique messages come together, that’s a revolution!
There are many ways to uplift cultural norms in entrepreneurship. First, we need to be aware that your words are powerful. Your message can affect your audience. Write and speak for them with you in mind. Next, while interacting with others, be kind. Last, think about the consequences of your actions before taking action! It might be best to react. A bonus tip for you all is to: do your research! Different cultural norms are authentically set for you to craft a unique message. Don’t overthink anything!
If you’re thinking about starting your own business, evaluate some cultural norms. You never know where inspiration for your unique message will come from as an entrepreneur. It’s important to be mindful of how cultural norms can affect our messages on social media.
You never know who is going to see what you post on social media! Stay true to yourself and be authentic with your voice. Stay away from anything too stereotypical on social media. Be positive with your words. Lead yourself before you lead others. Be open-minded! Train your brain to think positive. Positive thoughts and words will allow you to withstand any challenges.
Cultural norms are a sensitive and touchy subject in today’s society. When we use social media platforms like Instagram, people can forget about social norms. You see one face, one voice, or one word at a time. Sharing our lifestyles, brands, and businesses as an experience should be a narrative we curate as a culture. Our voices matter on these social media platforms. Especially, when we speak with clarity and confidence. Make people think about their actions. This is why your words should align with your vision as an entrepreneur. If you speak in a different way then what’s represented on your site, it could come back to haunt you! There are many ways that companies can avoid cultural appropriation when marketing their products and services. However, I’m focused on the choice of words. If you’re uncertain about the words being used to reflect your business, it might be time to reevaluate your mission. This type of action is good for the long-term. Continue to own your words and write your narrative!
